Benidorm is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations and each year the city is packed with tourists enjoying everything it has to offer. From long golden beaches to excellent bars, restaurants, and historical landmarks, it’s easy to see why Benidorm is so appealing. But when did Benidorm First Become a Holiday Resort?
Benidorm’s towering skyscrapers are one of the most iconic landmarks in the city and it was the foresight of the town’s mayor back in the 1950s who had the vision to transform the small fishing village into a holiday paradise. In doing so it transformed Benidorm into a dynamic and vibrant city with plenty to offer not only the locals but tourists as well.
In 1954, Pedro Zaragoza Orts invented the ‘package holiday’ as we know it today. Orts’ plan was to revolutionise the small village of Benidorm and turn it into a vibrant holiday destination. His plans were opposed by Church bishops, but his perseverance and planning saw every building in Benidorm having its own area of “leisure”.
Not surprisingly Benidorm became one of the most popular and fastest-growing holiday destinations in Europe throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Back then it was a very affordable place to come with cheap beer and cocktails and great food. All of which provided the services for an overwhelming number of tourists – Benidorm was the place to be seen!
Many people came from all over Spain to live and work in Benidorm, while thousands of people came from all over the world, bringing with them their own customs and traditions. With such diversity, Benidorm celebrates 56 different fiestas every year.
A lot has changed over the last few years, with the tourist-orientated economy modern-day Benidorm now boasts a profitable hotel industry and celebrated award-winning beaches. In fact, Benidorm’s skyline is well recognised as the high-rise capital of southern Europe.
With good weather guaranteed all year round it is the perfect destination for families and young children as well as those people looking to get away from the miserable British weather, especially during the winter months.
